(The discussion is on the methodology and core arguments of George Makari's 2007 book of the same title)
[Due to a family problem of George Makari in the last minute, his paper has been presented on Sunday morning, June 14, and Paolo Migone presented on Friday evening in his place]


SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2009

9:00 to 10:30 a.m.: This informal go-round is replaced with a Bob Holt Appreciation (All members invited) [Go to the 2009 Bob Holt Appreciation: Transcript, Audio, and Photographs]

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: PHEBE CRAMER, "Empirical Studies of Defense Mechanisms" [see full-text paper in PDF]
(This presentation reviews the highlights of 20 years of research on defense mechanisms, using narrative material to assess defense use. Both experimental and observational [correlation] studies are discussed)

12:30 to 2:00 p.m.: Lunch

2:00 to 4:00 p.m.: WILMA BUCCI, LEON HOFFMAN & BERNARD MASKIT, "New Computerized Methods of Inference from Treatment Notes and Treatment Process: A Study of Successful and Unsuccessful Cases at NYPI from 1950 to 1990s"
(The study focuses on the treatment notes of the treating analyst and asks the question, "What are the notes for and how can they be used?")

4:00 p.m.: Open discussion

10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: PAOLO MIGONE, "Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy Does Not Exist: A Theoretical Critique to the Concept of Short-Term Therapy"
(A discussion of the inner contradictions of the concept of brief therapy is the occasion for a theoretical inquiry on the identity of psychoanalysis and of psychoanalytic theory of technique, also of long-term therapies. Two clinical vignettes exemplify some of the issues under discussion)
